Braunton has high-street stores and boutique shops. Its museum tells the story of the Braunton Great Field, one of only two places in England still farmed in Saxon strips.

Next to the park
The Tarka Trail takes its name from Henry Williamson's 1927 book Tarka the Otter. Its 30-mile car-free stretch runs on the old railway line from Braunton to Meeth: level and mostly tarmac. Between Braunton and Barnstaple it follows the Taw estuary, past Chivenor. The whole trail is a 180-mile figure of eight centred on Barnstaple.

Barnstaple has the shops, the Pannier Market (built in 1855–56) and the railway station, with trains to Exeter. The station is about 4.2 miles from the park by road.
Braunton Burrows
about 4.1 miles
Braunton Burrows is the largest sand-dune system in England and the core of North Devon's UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Paths lead through the dunes to the beach at Saunton Sands.

Saunton Sands is a long west-facing beach with the dunes of Braunton Burrows behind it. There is room for everyone, and it is popular with longboard surfers.

Croyde's sandy beach sits at the back of a bay and is popular for surfing. Rip currents can be strong near the rocks at either end.

Getting here
By road: the park is off the A361 between Barnstaple and Braunton. The M5 at junction 27 is about 40 miles by road.
By train: Barnstaple station, with trains to Exeter, is about 4.2 miles away.
On foot or by bike: the car-free Tarka Trail runs along the estuary between Braunton and Barnstaple, through Chivenor.
