Getting to Chivenor

If you buy a lodge, you will make this journey many times, so it is worth knowing. The park is at Chivenor, just off the A361 between Barnstaple and Braunton.

By road

Most journeys come down the M5 to junction 27 at Tiverton, then along the A361, the North Devon Link Road, to Barnstaple. From the junction to the park is about 40 miles, a little under an hour on a clear road.

The first few miles of the A361 from the M5 are dual carriageway; after that it is a wide single carriageway. At Barnstaple, carry on along the A361 towards Braunton. The park is on the way, at Chivenor.

From Bristol and Birmingham it is the M5 all the way to junction 27. From London, routing usually takes the M3 and A303 to join the M5 near Taunton; the M4 to Bristol and then the M5 is the other common way.

By train

Barnstaple is the end of the Tarka Line from Exeter St Davids, where it meets main-line trains to Bristol and London. Trains run roughly hourly and take about 1¼ hours from Exeter.

Barnstaple station is about 4.2 miles from the park by road, roughly 10 minutes by car. On a fine day the Tarka Trail runs from Barnstaple along the estuary past Chivenor.

The train is also an easy way for family and friends to come and see you without the long drive.

By air

Exeter Airport is about 57 miles from the park by road, roughly 1¼ hours. Routes change from season to season, so check what is flying when you plan.

Coming often

The park is open from 1 March to 31 January, so you can come for a long weekend in March or a week in November when the roads are quiet. A midweek drive is usually easier than a summer Saturday.

The times here are for clear roads. The M5 and the roads into North Devon are slower on summer weekends and bank holidays, so allow extra time and plan a stop.

With your own lodge waiting at the end of it, there is less to pack each time, which makes even a short stay worth the drive.
